Sonangol is the exclusive concessionary for liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon exploration underground and on the continental platform of Angola.

Created in 1976 through the nationalization of ANGOL, the company's activities include prospecting, research, development, sales, production, transportation and the refining of hydrocarbons and their derivatives. These activities can be performed autonomously or in association with foreign companies. Ajoco, Braspetro, Daewoo, Falcon Oil, Hydro, Inaftaplin, Marathon, Naftagas, Neste Oil, Nirangola, Pedco, Petrogal, Petroinet, Prodey, Repsol, Saga, Shell, Statoil, Svenska and Teikokou are some of Sonangol's main partners.

Within this context, Sonangol is working to become a leader in the international market and in particular, the African market, as well as fulfil a dual role as both an integrated and competitive company and a transforming force in Angola. With this objective, it has adopted the philosophy of a company inserted into the market economy with investments in technology, a client-oriented approach and strict ethical conduct. It is engaged in the communities in which it operates and practices corporate responsibility in the areas of health, safety and the environment. Furthermore, Sonangol fully assumes its role as a public company whose achievements should have a direct return toward the sustainable development of its country.

With this vision, Sonangol is oriented towards the following activities:

  • The diversification of its activities in order to reduce its dependence on oil price oscillations
  • The development of refining, oil sales and derivative distribution as competitive businesses
  • The creation of ALNG and the development of the petrochemical product business
  • The generation of options for the re-positioning of Sonangol's business support areas

    The new visual identity of Sonangol 

    29 years after the establishment of Sonangol, Group Sonangol stands as a corporation with several subsidiaries. As the Group expands, the Administration Council determined that it was necessary for a new visual brand to give a cohesive and unified image of the entire Group. Thus, in November 2004 the redesigned logo was introduced as the new visual identity of the corporation.

    The new brand preserved the same colors of the original, but it was modernized to rejuvenate the company's image.

    All corporate stationery as well as some assets such as fuel tanks, airplanes, helicopters and storage tanks already display the new visual identity.

    But considering the costs of replacing the old visual identity for the whole corporation, the change will take place gradually. Initially only new facilities and vehicles will incorporate the new image and styling which will be introduced to existing sites and assets as they are remodeled.

    Since October 2003, downtown Luanda has been witness to the construction of Group Sonangol's future headquarters.

    The construction of the new headquarters began in late 2004 and will continue through the end of 2006. Our future headquarters building will have a modern architecture and will integrate amenities such as parking garage and restaurants.

    After its construction the new headquarters will be the working place for Sonangol Holding's employees as well as employees of some subsidiaries.
